Wandering Trips
When planning your travels this year, try to include a "wandering" trip. I do them often and they sure payoff with rewarding photographs.
What do I mean by a "wandering" trip? It's one where there's no set itinerary, no set plans, just getting there and wandering or hanging loose for the duration of the trip. It's not even knowing where you might be from day to day or where you might be spending the evening. Sound exciting? You bet! And your photographs will be all the better. Whether it’s a local photography trip for a few days or an extended vacation overseas, wandering is the way to go. It's the way of seeing and photographing real people and real places.
I recently conducted a photography workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico and when I was done I decided to wander to see what photographic opportunities would arise. I had no set itinerary, just a few days to roam. I went to Taos, Los Alamos, Bandalier and Albuquerque. At times, I literally stumbled onto interesting and picturesque subjects.
One of my favorite stops was the unique settlement of Taos Pueblo. Without plumbing or electricity and. abundant in Native American inhabitants, I felt as though I was stepping backwards in time. What great possibilities for me and my camera! The photograph shown here is one of my favorites from the delightful community of Taos Pueblo.
You'll be amazed at what you'll encounter on a wandering trip. You'll have a great time and you're sure to bring home many memorable and gratifying photographs.
